Oakwood Police Adopt Blue Envelope Initiative

The Oakwood Public Safety Department has launched a new program aimed at improving interactions between Public Safety Officers and drivers who have disabilities, fostering a safer and more understanding environment during traffic stops.

The Blue Envelope Program is voluntary and intended to meet the unique needs of drivers with conditions or disabilities that may impact their communication skills or ability to follow verbal instructions from officers.

The blue envelope itself is specially designed to hold essential documents for drivers, including their driver's license (copy), vehicle registration, insurance information, and emergency contact details. Inside each envelope, there is also a separate form where drivers can record their medical conditions or any necessary accommodations.

The Blue Envelope Program provides guidance for both the driver and officers, offering instructions that help facilitate effective communication and reduce the likelihood of misunderstandings. Through awareness, preparation, and empathy, the Blue Envelope Program contributes to making roads safer and more inclusive spaces.

Blue Envelope Program packets can be picked up at the Oakwood Public Safety Department, located at 30 Park Avenue or at the Wright Memorial Public Library located at 1776 Far Hills Avenue.

City officials recognized the Oakwood Inclusion Coalition for bringing this initiative forward and advocating for a program that promotes understanding, safety, and inclusion in the community.
