Please join Wright Library in partnership with the Oakwood Inclusion Coalition for a screening of Loving for Juneteenth. The film offers a meaningful extension of the holiday’s reflection on freedom, justice, and the ongoing struggle for civil rights. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in 1865, but Loving illustrates how systemic racial injustice persisted well into the 20th century. It also delves into how ordinary people helped dismantle it. Directed by Jeff Nichols, Loving (2016) tells the quiet yet powerful true story of Richard Loving and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple from Virginia whose marriage led to a landmark Supreme Court case. In 1958, the Lovings are arrested for violating state laws banning interracial marriage and are forced to leave their home. Rather than becoming outspoken activists, they simply want to live peacefully as a family. Their case, ultimately decided in Loving v.
